King Henry VIII
King Henry VIII
King Henry VIII was born at Greenwich Palace on June 28th, 1491. Also he was the second son of King Henry VII and Elizabeth. He ruled from 1509 till his death on January 28th, 1547 at White Hall Palace. He was the first English monarch to be educated under the influence of the Renaissance. During his reign, he was able to unite England and Wales, and he was able to take control of Ireland. Henry was more interested in arms and armor, jousting, hunting, swordplay and women than ruling a country. When he was older he got a wound on his leg that oozed pus and made exercise difficult. Doctors think that he had scurvy because he had bad breath, swollen gums, and loose teeth. After his death, three of his children, Edward VI, Elizabeth I and Mary, all became English rulers.

The Church of England
The Church of England
The Church of England was created after King Henry VIII tried to divorce Catherine of Aragon but the Pope wouldn’t allow it. So the parliament passed many acts in order to separate the English Church from the Roman hierarchy. The Church of England became know as the Anglican Church and it was of protestant religion. In 1534, King Henry VIII declared himself as the supreme head of the church. From then on, all of the English Monarchs were and still are the head of the church.

Accomplishments
King Henry VIII had many accomplishments throughout his reign. Some of his military accomplishments were that he had the largest invasion of France since King Henry V. Also, his first major battle was a win over Scotland in 1513 called the Battle of Flodden that ended in 1517. He was known as the “Father of the Navy”. England’s Navy ships increased from around three to five ships when he started to rule to 60 when his reign came to an end. Many of his religious accomplishments were recognized and Pope Leo X gave him the title “Defender of the Faith”. That title is still used for English monarchs today. He established the Church of England and the Act of Supremacy. And he changed England’s religion from Roman Catholic to Protestant. He had many political accomplishments such as adding the Imperial Concepts of Kingship to already existing Feudal Concepts. The Act of Appeals in 1533 helped the constitutional development of England. New lands and positions were created due to the dissolution of the monasteries. The union of England and Wales was legally accomplished by parliament in 1536 and in 1543. Because of all of his achievements, King Henry VIII had a lasting effect on England and its future Monarchs.
