Magna Carta: A series of laws to limit the kings power
By: Daniel Liu
The Magna Carta
The Magna Carta also known as Great Character was a document that took power away from King John. The Magna Carta was originally named the "Articles Of The Barons." It was written in England. It was a list of laws that protected peoples rights. The Magna Carta had a total of 63 laws, some new and some old laws. King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215 in Runnymede South England near Winder Castle in a meadow. The archbishop Stephen Langton and the barons made King John sign it because he had too much power and wasn’t following the laws. He was raising taxes and asked for more men to protect him when he didn't need them at the time.

King John Signing Magna Carta
King John ruled from 1199-1216 AD. He died on the night of October 18. King John demanded lots of money and protection from the barons. But he also raised the taxes which made many of the people very mad. King John started to make a lot of bad decisions and lost his land in northern France in 1204AD. In 1214 King John tried to get his land back in northern France but failed. When he went back to London he wanted more money so he raised the taxes. This was when the barons started getting mad and rebelled against him. The barons took up arms against King John.
Church Bell Tower
King John didn’t just make regular people mad by raising taxes; he also made the pope mad. In 1207 he banned all church services. Church services were very important to the society. The church told the people that they would go to heaven if they were good enough to get in. But If the church was shut down how were people supposed to show they were good enough for heaven? In 1209AD the pope excommunicated King john which meant he wasn’t going to heaven until the pope took the excommunication away.
U.S Constitution
The Magna Carta influenced the modern day society as it gave new ideas of democracy. It was the first form of documentation to give people certain rights like laws. The Magna Carta helped us write the Bill Of Rights. They are both similar with some of the same ideas. The Magna Carta is a list of rights that gave the people freedom and listed rights to protect ourselves, just like the Bill Of Rights today. It also had influenced The Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence says that “Everyone is the same and higher than the law." The Magna Carta and Bill of Rights both gave the people the freedom of speech. Both the Bill of Rights and Magna Carta laws say "no man should be imprisoned unlawfully."
