The First And Second Crusades
How Did The Crusades Start?
Pope Urban II
The Crusades were eight highly known expeditions during the Middle Ages. During the times before the Crusades, the Arabs in Jerusalem started to control the Christians that lived there. So Pope Urban II called for a Crusade. The first crusade lasted about two years: from 1096 A.D. to 1099 A.D. This led to eight different Crusades. All eight Crusades lasted 176 years: from 1096 A.D. to 1272 A.D.
The First Target
The Crusaders’ first target was the city of Nicea, Turkey. A faithful man named Raymond of Toulouse led this expedition. He brought the Christians to Turkey for battle. This battle was unsuccessful because the Turks destroyed the Christians. The Turks were strongly protected and a hard empire to face. Shortly after the first massacre came a second where the Muslims took over the Christians’ territory in Jerusalem and destroyed churches, temples and other buildings. Also, nearly 3,000 Christians were killed while this massacre occurred.
Christians wanted to claim Jerusalem again after the Muslims took over. many people volunteered to fight in the first crusade to reclaim Jerusalem. it took a long time to get to the Middle East for the Crusaders. During the first crusade a monk named Fulcher wrote about his experience from the first crusades. 70,000 people overall died during the first crusade.

The Second Crusade
Louis VII of France and Conrad III, Emperor of Germany led the second Crusade. Saint Bernard chose these two men. Saint Bernard was a man who preached and spoke to people in different crowds during the times of the Crusades and Middle Ages. The second Crusade was caused from a city called Edessa taken over by the Muslims. The entire population in Edessa was killed or sold into slavery. The second target for the Crusaders was Damascus, a city in Syria. Damascus was also a Muslim city. The Second Crusade was unsuccessful. The Crusaders fought Asia Minor. Nothing was accomplished during this Crusade. It lasted from 1147 A.D. to 1149 A.D.
