Renaissance
Music
Around 1501 all music was written by hand or learned by ear. Although
vocal music was the most popular, instrumental music was expanding from musical
technology staring to break out. Educated musicians in the Renaissance often
performed in Churches, Courts, and Towns. Everyone who was educated was
expected to read music or play an instrument. If you didn’t know how, you were
thought as if something was wrong with you. Some even were treated as an
outcast in their own family.

Church
Church
music or ‘Sacred music’ was sung in chants called Gregorian Chants, after Pope
Gregory I who founded a way to write musical notes. A professional male choir
or musically trained monks sang the Gregorian Chants. They sometimes sung in
new agricultural cathedrals. Sacred music was always vocal, spoken mostly in Latin and usually
sung in one tone, very low and very slow.

Court
The
musical popularity was starting to shift from the Church to the Court music.
Kings, Princes, Dukes and many other higher hierarchies competed against each
other to get the best composers. Most courts would have singers,
instrumentalists, music directors, and somewhere from at least 10-60 Musicians.

Town
Musicians
in towns didn’t want to remain unknown; they took credit for what they did and
performed in many small places in towns. City processions, weddings and
religious ceremonies are all places Town musicians would play. Some played on street sides and small area where windows would be. To get small change villagers would throw out their windows. Many then got a
higher status and higher pay.
