Where merchants traded to:
The main places that carried out trade were; Cairo, and Alexandria, (Egypt) Damascus, (Syria) Baghdad, and Mosul, (Iraq.) The reason why trade took place in these countries, is because they had really good location so it was easier to trade. Trade also went to India, Persia, and the Mediterranean Sea. The products that were brought across the Mediterranean Sea, were then traded and brought over to the Italian seaports, and soon after, brought into the rest of Europe.
What merchants traded:
The main items that were traded for were; spices, linen, Egyptian paper, pearls, perfumes, iron, wine, oil, and wax. They also exchanged precious metals. (In bars, not coined.) It was also said, that wherever merchants settled, laborers and artisans came too. The butchers, bakers, and brewers came to supply food for the workers. Things that were very helpful to have when trading were by having merchants, something to trade, a market place, a secure place to store your goods, and good, strong ships.
The Guilds:
Guilds were groups of people that made rules for certain things. Guild rules made sure that non-members could not trade within the town. The guilds also required standards for things made and sold by merchants. And if you didn’t follow these standards, then they will get kicked out of the guild group.
New money exchange:
In the beginning of trade and commerce, merchants would cut notches into a stick to keep track of debt. Then, they would break the stick in half when the debt was settled, and later destroy or keep it as a record. But later, they needed a more accurate way of keeping track of their money and stock. So in the 14th century, Florence invented a new way of counting- the double entry book-keeping system. Which really helped the merchants out a lot later on.
These are spices that they traded back
Then, and still today. Spices were just one
of the many items traded during
Middle Ages.
