Joan of Arc: a French Heroine
"I am not afraid... I was born to do this." - Joan of Arc
Joan's Importance
Joan of Arc was important because she was a heroine of France during the 100 years war. She was born on January 6, 1412, in Domremy, France. Born as a peasant farm girl during the 100 years war, she led the French army to a victory against England. Joan of Arc became important because it was said that she received visions from god telling her to lead the French Army and to escort the prince of France to Reims to be crowned king.
Accomplishments
Joan of Arc accomplished many things during her lifetime, even though she only lived until she was 19. She accomplished things like being chosen by god to lead an army, winning a battle against England, and leading Prince Charles to be crowned in Reims. Her visions usually contained the Archangel Michael, St. Catherine [of Alexandria], St. Margaret [of Antioch], and occasionally some others like the Archangel Gabriel. They told her to lead the French army, and escort Prince Charles to Reims. After she fulfilled the angles’ wishes she died at the stake because the English didn’t believe that she received visions from god.
Joan's motive
Joan of Arc’s motive was clear; her visions of angels that drove her to do what she did. She started receiving visions of the angels when she was about 13 and a half, and she was practically driven crazy from the constant visions. When she told people, they just thought she was mad. She always had resented talking about her visions since then. The only other times that she talked about her visions is with priests to prove that she received visions from god.
The Death of a Saint
Joan of Arc's life ended at an early age. She died at the young age of only 19 years old. After bringing Prince Charles [King Charles the VII] to Reims, France to be crowned, Joan of Arc received word that a nearby city was in trouble. She went to the city to hopefully help it, but the English trapped her inside it’s walls. The English gave Joan a trial, where they questioned her because they didn’t believe that she was a messenger from god, so they decided to burn her at the stake. When it was time for Joan to die, she asked for one thing; a small, wooden cross.
Joan's Influence on Today
Joan influenced modern society by being one of the first women fighting in an Army. Joan of Arc was one of the first women in the army, and that has helped the women of the present day to become a part of the Army. Women of all around the world are now allowed to join the armed forces and fight for their country. Without Joan's leadership and courage women might not be fighting in the armies today.
