Universities
How They Started
Universities changed our way of education and how we learn. The first university was established in about 1088 AD it was called Bologna. Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest universities, they were founded in 12th and 13th centuries. Schools were established at cathedrals (today what we call elementary schools). When cities got bigger they lost space and needed to expand and so they formed universities.
Where They Were Established
In the 19th and 20th centuries universities were established in places like Birmingham, Manchester, New Caste, Liverpool, and Leeds. Monks and priests also called clerics taught students. Clerics taught in Latin, which helped preserve Latin and they also worked to preserve religious texts.
What They Were Taught
At universities students were taught different subjects. Students learned first with trivium, which is grammar, parts of the bible and Latin classics. Also students were taught rhetoric which is like speech and logic. Quadrivium is arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. Together this makes seven liberal arts: trivium, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. You would finish these studies after 4 to 7 years, then you were awarded a degree of Bachelor of Arts or a baccalaureate.
Todays Universities
Today you have to have requirements to get in to a College. Some are good grades, and good test scores. There are about 3,000 universities in the U.S. today. It is not required that you go to universities but in today’s economy it is helpful because it is easier to get a job then. You go to college when you graduate high school and are about 18/19 years old. It is also possible that you could graduate high school early then go to college early.

Different careers you can choose from are Medical/Nursing, Real Estate, Culinary, Art and Design, Automotive, and Accounting.
